DESIGN: Channel

Effective use of screen space, however this layout won't work with the majority of users profiles pictures which are square. This design put user profile first which is an innovative progress from the existing design. Currently avatars are small squares across the site, this design brings the user to forefront.

The composition is more effective in a square format, it will work better with the traditional square format of user profile pictures that already exist.

The blocks over the image feel over designed, they are heavy and distract from the image, they don't allow for longer profile names either.

This layout makes uses of the video player always being present, which is innovative, however I don't think it's clear that it's a profile page, it's looks more like a video synopsis.

This feel much more effective it's always the image to speak and the overlaying content isn't distracting.

Content can a join from the other side of the screen, creating clear and easy user interaction without the needs for excessive button pushing to get to content. This layout put it all in one view.

These demonstrate varying views from channels content, however they feel crowded and I don't think the user will know where to look, the content is all merging into one.

In the final version navigation around the channel is now much more clear, the unified navigation bar at the left make accessing content easier without having to navigate all over the screen to complete task. The high contrast between the white and dark grey make it clear exactly where the user is within the interface. Individual content is no more clear as borders have been placed around images which has made it more effective than when the content was merging together in one.

DESIGN: Player

Controls Development

Works well. but is the control bar getting lost in the dark background of the video, not enough contrast, especially if viewed on a TV.

Made the controls slightly larger to make them more visible, still not happy with the black, not enough contrast.

Not that the controls are white the control icons stand out more, it works better for all device as it's more clear and will work regards of the colour of the video as the white opacity keeps the controls clear.

Video Info & Comments Development

Content feels cramped. Not enough contrast between navigation and content!

These icons would appear on hover, not sure if the user will know what to do. They might not be big enough or stand out. Also there is no hover in touch devices may need rethinking.

Responsive controls works well and adapt with the layout. Comments feel to large, icons are too big. Greater contrast between comments is also needed.

Content feel much more balanced now, however grey background bellow profile feels like navigation rather than content, unneeded design!

Icons stand out better now with full opacity overlay, work much better, more usable!

No distinction between the different sets of navigation, this needs to be simplified or made more clear.

This contrast better with the video than the previous black opacity overlay.

The final version feels efficient, there is clear contrast between the primary and secondary navigation. Emphasis is placed on content, and the profile, as discussed in my essay greater emphasis needs to be placed on the personalities behind the videos this layout/design certainly does that.

DESIGN: Gathering Content

In order to build and design the mock up for my concept for the future of YouTube I have gathered together a range of image content that will be used within the mockup's to represents video content and profiles, this will flesh out my design and make them come alive and feel real.\
